If you plant your crops in single lines they will grow faster than in a block.If you look at the images I've attached, the one with just what in it (horizontal lines), you can see how much more mature the back two rows are, this is because there's a gap between the two rows, thus making them two 1x9 rows, instead of a single 2x9 row.
