The problems are serious enough and enough is now known about the natural behaviors of orcas to know that it is entirely inhumane and cruel to keep them captive in this way, and it should be discontinued as soon as possible! Reply Rexy permalink September 16, 2010 6:16 pm I would like to add onto this topic that there IS video footage of the Kandu V vs. Reply keepwhaleswild permalink December 18, 2011 1:43 pm Every animal on this planet should have the to right to free will, to live in the habitat that they were genetically designed to reside in and be free from harm and from the whims of humans

MarineBio Projects - Ocean biology, Marine life, Sea creatures, Marine conservation...

There are tons of great materials online, let's gather them all in one place and see what's missing! Send us what you find with any remarks and suggestions you may have. One of our main goals is to help people learn about marine life and ocean conservation so that they will love the ocean too and help protect it, if not restore it to a healthy state

Other large constrictors that are less common in the pet trade seem not to show up (reticulated pythons, blood pythons, etc) and much smaller snakes, which were also imported to Florida in vast numbers, have not established in the same way (presumably because fewer individuals tire of them and release them). Anyway, the real question is, is it enough of a pest, and are control measures effective enough to justify the expense of trying removing it? My hearsay understanding is that the hunter advocacy organisation Ducks Unlimitted, in an effort to rebrand themselves as a conservation focused organisation (not to knock them, they do a lot of conservation work) hit upon Loosestrife as a flagship issue to advocate and they were instrumental in getting the ball rolling on that

Why You Should Think Twice About Vegetarian and Vegan Diets

This from one of the most recognized and accomplished nutritional researchers in the world.Reply Jacqueline Smith says February 25, 2014 at 2:14 pm yeah, that. My husband eats these eggs from time to time and will also eat any animal products that were going to be thrown out (leftovers from the office, etc.), but is very opposed to me buying animal products

Not human people, but as occupying a similar range on the spectrum as the great apes, for whom the idea of personhood has moved from preposterous to possible. Whale brains appear to have undergone massive growth about 30 million years ago, a process linked in primates to the development of complex cognition and culture

In another experiment, air sacs were surgically removed from a macaque (a Rhesus macaque Macaca mulatta), and its calls after the operation were reportedly no different than they were before. Studies have shown that the pouches of primates are inflated during exhalation (yes, exhalation: not inhalation), and that the air they contain is removed during inhalation

The employees would be sued for breaching said contract- no revealing of anything that goes on behind closed doors- practices, standards, training methods etc. Captive orcas are mere shells of their wild counterparts, unable even to engage in the most basic of their natural behaviors or live in their natural social groupings

Several SeaWorld calves have been rejected by their mother (an unnatural occurrence as far as we know), including Victoria, at Loro Parque, who just died at 10 months of age. Guiness World Record removed from Delphinus Xcaret The same year Earthrace became a world record holder in 2008, Guinness World Records also recognised Delphinus Xcaret in Mexico as having achieved the most dolphins born in a year in a single facility. Our anti-captivity campaign continues to pressure for: - a ban on all wild capture of marine mammals for public display; - transparency in the sourcing of all currently held and new captive marine mammals; - a ban on captive breeding programmes with a view to phasing out all captive marine mammals around the world - the addressing of inadequacies in the Code of Ethics under which all organisations around the world keep marine animals in captivity

While the specific details of the new standards of care for marine mammals are still being worked out, they are expected to improve a number of aspects from sizes of enclosures and social groupings to updating regulations on how animals are handled and displayed. Prohibiting the acquisition and breeding of orcas as we move forward on enhancing our standards of care to be among the best in the world is something Ontarians expect and these animals deserve

As stated, Sea World has taken in more than 800 sea creatures this year alone, and they will do their best to rehabilitate them, and then release them back into the wild. (I was surprised to learn that, since shows misled me) These shows also send the message that these animals love to interact with people all the time, and this leads to people believing that stupid friendly dolphin stereotype and they go out and bother wild dolphins

However, the MMPA requires that a marine mammal display facility only meet professional industry standards for education, so this element is self-policed and in essence means that educational standards have no outside oversight. In BC, they are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, The Endangered Species Act and the Species at Risk Act, yet the Department of Fisheries and Oceans is chronically understaffed and ill-equipped to prosecute individuals and businesses who break these laws

Commercial fishing interests would like to see the MMPA amended to modify, simplify, and clarify the definition of OSP as the objective for marine mammal management. Some scientists are concerned that state review of federal marine mammal permits is duplicative and burdensome for marine mammal researchers and circumvents the procedures in the MMPA (16 U.S.C

Elephants kill more zoo workers than all other species kept in zoos or circuses combined, and it is believed that around 200 mahouts are killed by their elephants each year in Thailand. One of the most commonly given reasons for keeping animals in captivity is that it allows scientists to investigate their physiology, anatomy and behaviour in detail

In his ruling Judge Kijlstra suspended the export permit for Morgan and instructed the Dutch Government to investigate the claims made by Visser, Hardie and others of the Free Morgan Foundation that Morgan should be returned to her home waters of Norway. We would recommend that you watch cetaceans in the wild with a responsible company or visit rehabilitation centers where the animals have been rescued and will be returned to the wild

If a predator such as a shark was swimming above a dolphin and looked down at it, the grey color that the shark would see would help it to blend in with the bottom of the ocean floor. If that same predator was underneath the dolphin looking up at it, its pinkish-white belly would blend in with the sky; therefore this counter-shading camouflages them

In addition, they receive less hydration from the frozen-thawed fish they are fed in marine parks, as opposed to the fresh fish they would eat if they were hunting in the wild. In captivity, these animals can only swim in endless circles in tanks that are the equivalent of bathtubs, and they are denied the opportunity to engage in almost any natural behavior. Encourage your local aquarium to create more space for rehabilitating (and releasing) injured wildlife by refusing to breed or bring in any more animals
