Officials at the Texas-based company expanded its earlier clawback to all of its ice cream, frozen yogurt, sherbet and frozen snacks after samples from half-gallons containers of its chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream also showed the bacteria that causes listeriosis, according to the company. Customers who bought Blue Bell products at supermarkets, convenience stores, retail outlets and in food service accounts in 23 states and in international locations should return them for a full refund, company officials said
Almost everyone who is diagnosed with listeriosis has invasive infection, meaning the bacteria spread from their intestines to the blood, causing bloodstream infection, or to the central nervous system, causing meningitis. However, "Contaminated ice cream products may still be in the freezers of consumers, institutions, and retailers, given that these products can have a shelf life of up to 2 years," the CDC statement said

The disease primarily affects pregnant women and their newborns, older adults, and people with immune systems weakened by cancer, cancer treatments, or other serious conditions (like diabetes, kidney failure, liver disease, and HIV)
However, epidemiologic evidence, including acquiring infection at the same hospital as the other patients and consumption of the ice cream products, suggests that this illness may be related. Since the last update on April 8, 2015, two additional patients, one each from Arizona and Oklahoma, were confirmed to be a part of the outbreak by whole genome sequencing

The Alabama agreement is similar to agreements reached between the company and Texas and Oklahoma state regulatory agencies as announced on May 14, 2015. Once the company is ready to resume production, the voluntary agreement also calls for a trial production period before ice cream is distributed to consumers
Brenham-based Blue Bell Creameries issued an initial recall in March after ice cream contaminated with listeria bacteria was linked to three deaths in Kansas. On Tuesday, Blue Bell announced the expansion of its recall of products from the Broken Arrow, Okla., plant after banana pudding ice cream also tested positive for listeria bacteria
The sample tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes, a potentially deadly bacteria that is especially harmful to the very young, the elderly and pregnant women. Marler, who has not filed any legal cases against Blue Bell, said the retiree ate the ice cream in April, just days before Blue Bell pulled all of this product from the market
Five people were hospitalized at the same Kansas hospital for unrelated problems before developing invasive listeriosis, a finding that strongly suggests their infections were acquired in the hospital, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The affected products include the following novelty items made on the line: Chocolate Chip Country Cookie Great Divide Bar Sour Pop Green Apple Bar Cotton Candy Bar Scoops Vanilla Stick Slices Almond Bar No Sugar Added Mooo Bar (regular Mooo Bars are not included) Consumers should not eat these items and should discard any of these products they may have in their freezers
