Blue Bell on Friday suspended operations at its Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, plant that officials previously had connected to a foodborne illness linked to the three deaths. H-E-B, with more than 300 stores in Texas and northern Mexico, said the decision Saturday was a "precautionary measure due to food safety concerns." Three deaths were reported from Kansas.The CDC and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment report that there are five patients who were treated in a single hospital in Kansas and who were infected with one of four rare strains of Listeria monocytogenes. Three of these strains, which are highly similar, have also been found in products manufactured at the Blue Bell Creameries production facility in Brenham, Texas

The company instituted the recall and suspended operations at its Oklahoma plant last week after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned that ice cream made at the facility likely caused a foodborne illness linked to three deaths in Kansas. Company spokesman Gene Grabowski had said Monday that the recall was over but that was incorrect, Grabowski and spokeswoman Jenny Van Dorf said Tuesday

From its Oklahoma plant, the Brenham-based company sold products to Texas retail stores, not just to Texas institutional customers, such as hospitals and schools, Grabowski said
