Auroras occur when charged particles (electrons and protons) collide with gases in the Earth's upper atmosphere, producing tiny flashes that fill the sky with colourful light. Fact number 5 Our atmosphere protects us from solar radiation on Earth, but aircraft crews on transpolar flights and astronauts receive higher doses of radiation during intense solar activity

Aurora Borealis - Northern Lights - Frequently Asked Questions

When a gust of solar wind buffets the earth's magnetic shield and some of that energy comes streaming down our magnetic poles this is the science that creates the magic of the northern lights and is known as a "geomagnetic storm." We have magnetometers and other types of instruments that record this incoming energy in real time and give us an instant heads-up that something could be happening in the skies overhead. Is aurora borealis viewing best with a moon or no moon? I personally like moonlight because it lights up the foreground and makes the sky a deep blue instead of pitch black like with no moon

This is not the goal for photographing the Northern Lights, we want, vivid color and nice detail.Keeping your exposure time between 5-25 seconds will work very well for shooting the northern lights. This is rarely the case for landscape photos, and NEVER the case for night photos.I can take a photo such as the one above, and using the exposure slider within Lightroom, brighten the entire photo up 4 stops prior to seeing any noise being induced in the photo

Westbound flights usually fly furthest north; going east, aircraft tend to follow a much lower track, crossing the 50-degree line of latitude shortly before arriving in the UK.One more complication: many westbound flights leave the UK in the morning, rendering the Northern Lights invisible. For any trip to see the Northern Lights, plan in the expectation that the travel gods will prove recalcitrant, and that the heavens will fail to come alive

I will follow your suggestions to the word and look forward to some decent photos from the depths of Northern Scotland Given the equipment that I have if you have any other suggestions I would love to know what they might be but I respect that you are a busy person and cannot reply to many e-mails. Aurora captured on a camera rarely looks like the eye saw it anyway, since you are dealing with a timed exposure, and a digital sensor that is able to capture colors that it is hard to see with the human eye
