The movement to free Keiko was heartily supported by many animal lovers, but Malene Simon of the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources, who was involved in the effort to return him to the wild, told the New Scientist last year that the project may have gone too far in its efforts to help the orca return to his wild state. Eventually, Keiko was moved from a marine park to an aquarium in Oregon, where he recovered from health problems and was taught behaviors necessary for him to make the transition from captive animal to wild animal

What conservation and research efforts is the Georgia Aquarium involved with? BC: While the Aquarium already has participated in a multitude of research programs, in 2010 Georgia Aquarium is financially supporting and participating in more than a dozen research projects. The problems are serious enough and enough is now known about the natural behaviors of orcas to know that it is entirely inhumane and cruel to keep them captive in this way, and it should be discontinued as soon as possible! And there are many places in the area where you can see orcas from the shore, for free, often more up close than on a boat (where Federal regulations limit vessels to 200 yards away)

Guiness World Record removed from Delphinus Xcaret The same year Earthrace became a world record holder in 2008, Guinness World Records also recognised Delphinus Xcaret in Mexico as having achieved the most dolphins born in a year in a single facility. Our anti-captivity campaign continues to pressure for: - a ban on all wild capture of marine mammals for public display; - transparency in the sourcing of all currently held and new captive marine mammals; - a ban on captive breeding programmes with a view to phasing out all captive marine mammals around the world - the addressing of inadequacies in the Code of Ethics under which all organisations around the world keep marine animals in captivity

All animals, including human beings, suffer to a varying extent in their natural environment and it would be inconceivable for animals not to suffer at times in captivity. He recommended that "the taking or killing of any cetacea - whether intentionally for scientific, display or other purposes, or incidentally such as in fishing or shark-netting operations - should be carefully scrutinised to ensure that it is either essential or unavoidable." Australia's Senate Select Committee on Animal Welfare also considered the suffering of the animals: "The fact that cetacea undergo some suffering in captivity is not, of itself, an overriding factor in determining whether cetacea should be held in captivity

Not human people, but as occupying a similar range on the spectrum as the great apes, for whom the idea of personhood has moved from preposterous to possible. Whale brains appear to have undergone massive growth about 30 million years ago, a process linked in primates to the development of complex cognition and culture

Surveys show that most people prefer to see marine mammals displaying natural behaviors rather than performing "tricks and stunts." A public display of wild animals is not necessary to engage people. Many wild animals, including several whale species, enjoy a high degree of public interest and concern despite never being maintained in captivity for public display

Cougar: Minnesota DNR

Since 2007, DNR has verified 14 sightings in Minnesota from trail camera photos of cougars, several cougars that were killed or found dead and other signs such as tracks. What do cougars eat? Cougars subsist primarily on mammals, primarily ungulates such as deer, but also rabbit, squirrel, porcupine and other smaller animals

Text of the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) :: NOAA Fisheries

If the Secretary issues such a permit for importation, the Secretary shall issue to the importer concerned a certificate to that effect in such form as the Secretary of the Treasury prescribes, and such importation may be made upon presentation of the certificate to the customs officer concerned.(2) Marine mammals may be taken incidentally in the course of commercial fishing operations and permits may be issued therefor under section 1374 of this title subject to regulations prescribed by the Secretary in accordance with section 1373 of this title, or in lieu of such permits, authorizations may be granted therefor under section 1387 of this title, subject to regulations prescribed under that section by the Secretary without regard to section 1373 of this title. Any recommendations which are not followed or adopted shall be referred to the Commission together with a detailed explanation of the reasons why those recommendations were not followed or adopted.Section 203

However, the MMPA requires that a marine mammal display facility only meet professional industry standards for education, so this element is self-policed and in essence means that educational standards have no outside oversight. In BC, they are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, The Endangered Species Act and the Species at Risk Act, yet the Department of Fisheries and Oceans is chronically understaffed and ill-equipped to prosecute individuals and businesses who break these laws

To obtain a female dolphin of breeding age, for example, boats are used to chase the pod into shallow waters, where the animals are surrounded with nets that are gradually closed and lifted onto the boats. Many became exhausted and drowned.3 Orcas and dolphins who escape the ordeal of capture become frantic upon seeing their captured companions and may even try to save them

The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies

If a predator such as a shark was swimming above a dolphin and looked down at it, the grey color that the shark would see would help it to blend in with the bottom of the ocean floor. If that same predator was underneath the dolphin looking up at it, its pinkish-white belly would blend in with the sky; therefore this counter-shading camouflages them

This conference will provide a forum for people working on issues affecting these and other marine mammal species, and provide an opportunity to review their current health status, discuss future directions of investigation, and determine actions likely to produce benefits to their health and survival

Osmoregulation in Marine Mammals

The antidiuretic role of vasopressin remains inconclusive in marine mammals, while the natriuretic function of atrial natriuretic peptide has yet to be examined. Plasma data Water flux studies have demonstrated that consumption of fresh water can be high, leading to lower osmotic and ionic concentrations (Ortiz et al., 1998; Ortiz et al., 1999)

Commercial fishing interests would like to see the MMPA amended to modify, simplify, and clarify the definition of OSP as the objective for marine mammal management. Some scientists are concerned that state review of federal marine mammal permits is duplicative and burdensome for marine mammal researchers and circumvents the procedures in the MMPA (16 U.S.C

government allows the capture of wild marine mammals for public display, justifying this exemption from the Marine Mammal Protection Act's prohibition of exploitation and harassment by contending that public display serves educational and conservation purposes. And the act of capturing betrays the trust of dolphins in particular, who often come to play at the bow of the capture boat, only to be netted and hauled aboard, an incredibly traumatic ending to an innocent and joyous behavior
