You start on a bridge, run through an amusement park, across another bridge, on a race track, across another bridge, past Habitat 67, then past some of historic Montreal. Well, out of my 97 marathons to date, this turned out to be a Top 5 marathon experience for me, a new PR and a race that I would return to run again and again in the future

Third, there were only two inaugural half-marathons with more than 5,000 finishers compared to a record six in 2012 including two with more than 10,000 finishers. In addition, last year, there were a record 10 half-marathons worldwide with more than 20,000 finishers (previous record, 9 in 2012), and for the first time, just to be in the top 30 world list, a half-marathon had to have nearly 13,000 finishers

The last two-plus miles of the race, starting with the turn onto India Street and concluding with the finish line along Pan American Road inside the park, are mostly long, flat straightaways, which give runners a nice way to finish the course. Once runners descend the monument and Fort Rosencras area, the course next takes a turn through the Point Loma and La Playa neighborhoods, where spectators are usually out in droves to cheer on those running in the race, some even with hoses and sprinklers to cool everyone down

There were ample refreshments at the end, staff handing out chocolate milk to the late arrivals (like me), and medical support with a well-staffed facility at the end with attentive personnel along the way in. The comments on last year's run were discouraging, but I found plenty of water, Gatorade, GU, and cheer along the way all the way through the last water station (about mile 25)

Before runners reach the mile 2 marker, the full marathoners split off from those running the half, and continue on a course that will take them along the shoreline of Mission Bay near SeaWorld. Here, several stretches of the race will bring runners close to the cliffs that look over into Mission Valley below, before heading back to Adams Avenue
