How to install SQL Server 2005 Express in Windows 8 - Stack Overflow
We have a few new servers we're looking to roll out with Windows 2012 but we didn't feel the need to upgrade SQL Server since the 2005 version has all the functionality we need and the cost to license SQL 2012 on these boxes would have been a 5-figure sum. Stop SQL Service and restore orignal versions of SQLServr.exe and SQLOS.dll (or else SP4 doesn't think it is needed in the next step) Install SQL Server 2005 SP4 Install SQL Server 2005 SP4 Cumulative Hotfix 5069 (Windows Update wasn't offering this for some reason so I had to download and install manually) If you want the latest documentation, install the latest version of SQL Server 2005 Books Online

Geeks With Blogs
There are a few articles out there on how to enable compatibility mode on Vista but I had a tough time finding the exact procedures on Windows Server 2008 so I figured I would post them here in case anybody else is having trouble. Reporting Services is a prerequisite for TFS and when running through the installation of SQL Server 2005 on Windows Server 2008, you may notice the option to install Reporting Services is grayed out
Installed and ready At this point, SQL Server 2005 Express Edition is installed and can be managed using the SQL Server Management Studio Express tool that was installed along with the database server. When possible, don't use the built-in service accounts on your SQL Server as this practice does not limit your server's attack surface as much as using an unprivileged user account
windows - Cannot generate SSPI context from SQL Server Management Studio (2005) - Server Fault
I also tried to follow the steps to troubleshoot this found in the Microsoft Knowledge Database - nothing worked so far! I am using Windows 7 if that matters
Although you might encounter a brief-but-steep learning curve when first encountering the new tools, it will be well worth your while to spend some time familiarizing yourself with their vast list of possibilities. Unlike with Enterprise Manager, the Management Studio component for registering servers and organizing those servers is separate from the component for exploring server objects
Fred A 27 Feb 2011 7:14 AM Hi Beth, After running SQL Server SP2 on Windows 7 x64 did it upgrade your SSMS to 10.2.4000.0 or did it leave it at 10.50.1600.1? Both my Win3k3 x32 bit and Vista x32 systems have been upgraded to 10.2.4000.0. Being on the VS team I have a lot of internal builds to install of VS so I am also semi-frequently installing SSMS on the VMs :) Cheers!
